Q: What is the most common culprit when it comes to skin damage?

A: Most people would probably guess the sun, and they would be right, however environmental pollution is a very close 2nd. It permeates our lives. We breathe it. We eat and drink it. We absorb it through our skin. Sadly, we can’t escape it.  It gets inside our bodies and accelerates the breakdown of our cell structure.

Q: How serious is it?

A: Deadly serious, skin cancer affects one in five Americans, with more than one million new cases diagnosed each year. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2006 there will be 62,190 new cases of melanoma in this country, and about 7,910 people will die from it.

Q: How exactly does pollution affect the skin?

A: Most scientists in the field of anti-aging believe that oxidants or free radicals generated during the natural process of breathing air along with those created from living in an exogenously polluted environment cause the skin to age.

Those free radicals generated internally by normal respiration are a necessary part of life and are essential for cell-to-cell communication.
